John L. Ferko

John L. Ferko (92) of Glassport passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, December 2nd at the Veteran’s Community Living Center in Aspinwall under the compassionate care of the VA staff. He was born on April 23, 1924 in Munhall. He was preceded in death by parents, Suzanna (Trella) and Andrew Ferko, sisters Anna Ferko and Mary (William) Boldizar, brother, Andrew (Julie) Ferko, son, Richard Ferko, daughter, Kathleen Smedley, daughter-in-law, Mary Manno Ferko, and his beloved wife of 64 years, Cecilia Ferko. A loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather, John will be deeply missed by sons, Jack and Joseph (Bonny) Ferko, daughter, Denice Ferko-Adams and (Keith) Adams; daughter-in-law, Terri Ferko, son-in-law, Terry Smedley; eleven grandchildren, Brian (Jenna) Ferko, Kristen (Steve) Hampton, Jason (Kerri) Ferko, Heather (Robert) Hunt, Holly Smedley, Heidi (Corey) Lemmon, Rachel and Laurel Adams, Kelli and Kevin Ferko, Tiffany (Brian) Jacobs; and 5 great grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaylee and Natalie Hunt, and Conor and Owen Hampton. John served with the U.S. Army, 19th Combat Engineers attached to the Infantry, as a Corporal T-5, and fought in campaigns in Northern Italy and in Manila, Philippines, earning two bronze stars and a World War II victory medal. He retired from the Homestead Steel Works after 42 years, and then worked as a handyman for St. Aloysius Church (now St. Jude) in Wilmerding where his brother-in-law, Fr. Edward Strelinski, served as pastor. He was a member of Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church and the American Legion. He loved spending time with his family, telling stories, performing home and auto repairs for all, fishing, dancing, teaching his dogs new tricks, and tending to his plants. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 4, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at E. C. FINNEY FUNERAL HOME in Glassport. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 AM on Monday, December 5, at Queen of the Rosary Church in Glassport. Fr. Ernest Strelinski, brother-in-law, and Fr. Miroslaus Wojcicki, Pastor, will be the celebrants. Entombment will be at the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church or Veterans Affairs Hospice Unit, 1010 Delafield Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15215.
