Joan Beissel Obituary

Joan Kemp Beissel passed away on May 7, 2019, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Elizabeth Township, she was born January 18, 1930, to the late Thomas and Mary Moore Dierker Kemp. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Donald E. Beissel, her twin sister, Jean Matezik, and her brother, Thomas Kemp. She is survived by her two daughters, Vickee Altman, and her husband Gary, of Uniontown, and Wendee Lindsey and her husband Randy of Elizabeth Township and her three grandchildren, Alan Lindsey, and wife Brittany, of Liberty Boro, Stephanie Altman of Raleigh, NC., and Abigail Altman of Baltimore, MD. She graduated from Clairton High School in 1947 and attended the Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing where she obtained her license as a registered nurse. She completed her nursing education with a BSN from California University of Pennsylvania. She worked as a registered nurse at the McKeesport Hospital in the premature infant nursery, but perhaps is best remembered for her many years as a school nurse for the Elizabeth-Forward School District. She and her husband Don enjoyed retirement by hosting pig roasts for their family and friends at their backyard swimming pool and by traveling throughout North America in their motor home, sometimes even wintering in southern climates. They also traveled to such places as Hawaii, Italy, England, Mexico and the Caribbean. A highlight was sailing through the Panama Canal. Family and friends will be received at the S.M. FINNEY FUNERAL HOME, 432 N. 6th Street, Clairton, PA, 15025, on Friday, May 10, from 2 – 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM, a short memorial service will be held at 7:30pm with a repose to follow at the LochMon Tavern, 2510 Lincoln Boulevard, Elizabeth, PA., 15037. A private committal will occur at a later date at Jefferson Memorial Park. Online condolences may be offered at www.finneyfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Monkey’s House Hospice of Burlington County, NJ, a no-kill shelter for dogs with terminal diagnoses or hard to adopt disabilities. http://www.monkeyshouse.org/cms.
