Albert Mendicino Obituary

Albert M. Mendicino, 93, of North Versailles, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was a former resident of Glassport. He was the son of the late Sam and Fannie Mendicino. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret (Elkanic) Mendicino; two daughters, Monica (Richard) Semanisin, of North Versailles, and Nadine (David) Erdody, of Boca Raton, Fla.; two brothers, Sam (Marlyn) Mendicino, of Saxonburg, and John (Barbara) Mendicino, of Monroeville; two sisters, Angeline Kaloz, of Irwin, and JoAnn (Tom) Suda, of Fort Myers, Fla.; one granddaughter, Gwen Brown, of Wilkins Township; one great-grandson, Joey Brown, of Wilkins Township; many nieces and nephews; and pet cat, Gordon. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Margaret Kanar, Victoria Abbatangelo, Evelyn Gregory and Vera Mendicino. Albert was enlisted in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He served in Pacific Theater, Infantry-ATFU, in Marshal Islands and Philippines-Okinawa, where he received his Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was discharged from Pheonixville Army Hospital, Pa., in 1946. He was also awarded Combat Badge. He retired as a machine operator at Copperweld, Bi Met. He attended St. Robert Bellarmine, North Versailles, and previously attended St. Cecilia, Glassport. He belonged to American legion, Glassport, DAV, VFW, North Versailles. Albert truly enjoyed life and will be missed deeply. Family would like to thank Grane Hospital Hospice for their excellent and dedicated care. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at E.C. FINNEY FUNERAL HOME, 235 Monongahela Ave., Glassport. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Queen of the Rosary, Glassport. Interment with military honors will follow at National Cemetery of the Alleghenies
